Bucs Robotics is composed of students from all grade levels at Bedford High School. This year, the team has about twenty-five students, with an almost equal division of male and female students participating. We will be graduating twelve seniors in June 2011 and focus throughout this season has been on helping the underclassmen gain more hands-on experience so that they will be better prepared for future seasons.
Bucs Robotics was formed in 2008, when a local business approached Bedford High School about helping to start a robotics team to participate in FIRST. Employees of Entegris, located in Billerica, Massachusetts, had been to an event where Dean Kamen spoke and were impressed with what the program offered high school students. They agreed to fund the team’s first season and provide several engineers to work with the high school students. Midway through the season, the team was approached by FLIR Systems, located in North Billerica, Massachusetts, who had heard about the rookie team and wanted to offer additional support.
The first two seasons of Bucs Robotics have been quite successful. During the 2008 season, the team received the Rookie All-Star award at the Connecticut Regional and had the chance to travel to the World Championship. During the 2009 season, the team overcame a tough financial situation and was part of the winning alliance at the BAE Granit State Regional. They again had the chance to travel to the World Championship. We are excited to be competing at the 2011 Manchester Regional, with old and new friends from all over.
The team has continued to grow as students at Bedford High School learned about the opportunities available. We look forward to the next several years of growth as we solidify our identity as a team and continue to grow with our new experiences. We couldn't do it without the support of our sponsors, mentors, families and friends.
Bucs Robotics would like to extend a warm thank you to this year’s team mentors for their support through the 2010 Season!
